FAQs
What is an Endodontist?
An Endodontist is a dental specialist who has completed two additional years of advanced training in root canal therapy after dental school. They are your root canal experts.
What is a root canal?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure done to remove the pulp, or nerve, inside the tooth if it has become inflamed or infected. The pulp is cleaned out and the space inside the tooth is sealed. The goal of root canal treatment is to save your natural tooth.
Is a root canal painful?
Root canal procedures are done to alleviate pain from toothaches. With modern anesthetics and techniques, most patients report little to no discomfort during their treatment. We generally use more local anesthetic than you are used to receiving for your general dental procedures to ensure maximum comfort. Your tooth may feel sore for a couple days after treatment. Over-the-counter medications like Advil or Tylenol are usually sufficient to manage this sensitivity.
How many appointments will I need for my root canal?
Most root canal procedures can be done in one or two visits. Please note that the number of appointments will depend on the complexity of the case and other patient specific factors.
What do I need to do after my root canal treatment has been completed?
We will place a temporary filling in the tooth after your treatment. When endodontic treatment is complete, it is very important that you contact your general dentist to schedule a permanent restoration. Your general dentist has extensive training and experience in restorative dentistry and is the best qualified professional to place the permanent restoration.
